Set sail
for the next ten years.
"Then the Lord answered me and said, 'Write the vision and engrave it plainly on tablets so that the one who reads it may run.'"
The purpose of this document called Voyage 20 is to write the vision down for the beginning of a new journey. We are preparing to set sail for the next 10 years of VR Church and MMO Church. I encourage you to read this vision thoroughly.
We built this boat ten years ago.
Think of our church like a pirate boat. We built this boat ten years ago and set sail on many adventures. We've made many friends. We have won and lost many battles. Through peaceful oceans and vicious storms, we've continued to sail. This is important to celebrate… we continue to sail after all these years.
Through our journey, we've grown strong and resilient. Not only have we grown strong and resilient, but we also have unearthed multiple treasure chests worth of knowledge and practice. These treasure chests of knowledge and practice are the type of stuff money can't buy. In other words, they are invaluable.
As Bishop, I've been watching how the boat sails. Perhaps this is part of the apostolic gifting: to be able to see how the ship handles in certain conditions. I notice where the sails need patching, and what supplies are needed for the next leg of the journey.
As we approach the tenth anniversary of our church, let's imagine that we are docked at port. Let's take this opportunity to take stock. Then let us restock for the journey ahead.
Figuratively speaking, we'll need to patch up the hull and put on new sails. We may need to add more crew. We will release old crew who want to get off the boat. We'll pull up the maps we've charted and take a breather to celebrate. We'll take time to celebrate the ten year anniversary and all the adventures we've been on. Then we will set sail again on a new voyage.
Ten years charted. Ten years ahead.
Past adventures and the new heading. Where we've sailed, and where Voyage 20 leads.

Mechanics aren't just mechanics.
The following mechanics are not mechanics for mechanic's sake. They are elements that will lead to clarity and movement. Movement is life.
When you add sails to a boat, we see cloth, but it is much more. Sails are the mechanics for movement.
The following may seem mechanical and unimportant to our voyage. On the contrary, they are critical for moving us forward.
People may confuse this as a re-branding, but let us think more transcendent. Renewal is the word that comes to mind, lest we become like the churches and institutions of the past who fail to renew and find themselves stuck in the mire and muck of the seas.
They beset themselves into the rut and rhythm of use, refusing to change. Change is hard, but necessary to avoid the gravitational pull toward the worst possible thing: irrelevance.
What mechanics are we seeking to employ?
The first one is theology. Rather than calling it theology, perhaps we call it a signal, like a flag at the top of the mast. The flag is love.
Let love be our highest goal. This is our lifeblood. We become radical solely on this point. Love is the greatest commandment of all.
New sails to create a new sense of movement.
Back to mechanics: allow me take a moment to declare new mechanics or sails to create a new sense of movement.
New Website
Our living signal is love. Other signals include universality, diversity, and technology as a tool.
New Discord
Refresh the vision with a tighter, more engaged group. More intentional. Membership shepherding.
Logo Update
The logo holds up all these years later. Let's keep it. Perhaps we give it a slight refresh.
AI Apps
Create our own back-end platforms. Cost savings — and more importantly, ownership.
VRChat World
A brand new VRChat world. Combining church world, park, and conference into one experience.
Service Times
A new Sunday service at 1pm CST. Earlier time to re-engage our European community.
Seminary Reboot
Consider rebooting our leadership pathway with VR Seminary. Update at the very least.
World Building
Have our pulse on platforms with world-building tools. The element that made us unique.
Ideas
Develop an idea document, but be careful of implementation for the sake of sustainability.
Pauline Ministry
Return to our Pauline roots. Ministry to the non-religious, a course correction toward our calling, not a rebrand.
A major front door experience.
The VR Church and MMO Church website is a major front door experience. We can declare our living signal of love. In addition, we make our values clear.
Side energy has been a huge problem in the past. Having confrontations about certain issues time and again about the same topic distracts us from our voyage. Let's find our language and focus to bring absolute clarity so that we may harness a laser focus.
Our living signal and living values will be posted on our website as a declaration, then copied to our new Discord on boarding and our social media. It's everywhere… for clarity.
Love is the greatest. Everything else flows.
Love is the highest goal — the flag at the top of the mast. The fruits of the spirit grow from that single signal.
A new Discord is needed.
A new Discord is needed to hit the refresh button. It's an opportunity to create a new alignment for our community and for the future that reflects our living signal and values.
Why not update our current Discord? From experience, I find it is easier to restart than to change what exists. Changing what exists would be a difficult task because of use and resistance.
A new Discord will be like putting on new sails.
Anytime major changes come, people will get upset and leave. I find this is more about finding a reason to leave. People on this pirate ship might have wanted off for some time. This is an opportunity to let them go. They may use this change as an excuse, but it's not about change. It's about an opportunity to get off.
We'll start with the website first and let people see the Voyage 20 vision before deciding whether they want to get back on board. We are not going to stop the ship from sailing new seas based on people leaving.
Member tags & support priority
I believe membership is going to be important from here on out. This means that those who attend our events will get the member tag on Discord. This is important when support tickets are activated. That doesn't mean we wouldn't help out non-members. However, we may prioritize members for face-to-face meetings. For non-members, we could share resources.
It is fire. Let's keep it.
I think the logo should stay the same. It is fire. After all these years, I think it's the coolest logo. I do think we should use separate logos for VR Church and MMO Church and not the combined one. This will be spoken about more in the identity and nomenclature of the church.
Distinct external logo.

All the tools are at our disposal. Let's use them.
Much has changed since we've cast vision for VR Church and MMO Church. One of those changes is the advent of artificial intelligence, a technology moving at light speed.
We use language models for research and to amplify our thinking and organization. We use music generators to create copyright-free worship songs tailored for our experience.
We can use AI code to create what we need. We don't need to purchase platforms because we can create our own. The idea is to become a sustaining platform unto ourselves. We don't need third parties because we can create our own. This means service scheduling or volunteer processes can be created on our own platform, tailored for what we need, even with back-end technology.
We are entering an era where all the tools are available at our disposal. Let's use them.
With the advent of AI agents like Claude Code, we create our own back-end platforms and processes the way we want. One huge benefit is cost savings, and more importantly, ownership.
We can create anything: service planning, volunteer processes, and even spiritual gifts.
We make it. We host it. We own it.
The metaverse is far from dead.
AltspaceVR shut down. Rec Room closed. Horizon Worlds is limited. However, VRChat remains. I believe people may look at the landscape and declare the metaverse is dead. This is far from the truth.
The old can't create the new. Facebook created the new amongst legacy institutions. Years later, Meta (Facebook) can't create the metaverse because they are established in their Web 2 model. That's where they make bank. Thankfully, they've sustained the hardware vision, but they don't have the vision for the future in terms of virtual experiences.
The future of the metaverse is coming. And like Zuckerberg who created a new era in his dorm room, we will discover a college student or young-mind creator who will create the true metaverse.
Another way you can tell that VR is not dead is Valve. Arguably, Valve is one of the influential companies in video games. We wait with anticipation for the Steam Frame, the new VR headset.
On a consistent basis, VRChat has 50,000 concurrent players every day. These are crazy numbers. Games of any type would love to have those numbers. In other words, the metaverse, VR, and Web3 is far from dead. VRChat and Steam Frame alone are carrying the next wave.
Platform survival map
50,000 CONCURRENT / DAY
A consistent baseline of 50,000 concurrent players, every day. Games of any type would love to have these numbers.
While our church has been closed down on many platforms, we have an opportunity to dig down deep into a unique part of human interaction and further establish our community in VRChat, a city of 50,000 people.
In this situation, less is more. We can find a focus for the time being until we can expand to what makes us unique, which is world building.
With all this in mind, we are looking to create a VRChat space that combines our worship center, church park, and church conference room. We may need to create a GoFundMe to help fund the new worship center.
VRChat is far from over. And even if VRChat shuts down, we'll find a way to gather.
Across time zones, a single hour.
Service times have always been a challenge. For a physical church, they have a regular time for their local experience. For us, we are international. We can't cover every time zone. Currently, we have VRChat at 4 pm CST, but we may move to 1 pm CST. One of the key reasons, among many, is to allow European time zones to get involved more.
Ideally, we find a common day with MMO Church.
A reboot. Or at least an update.
A quick note about the seminary I developed to help train leaders. The content and interaction are currently on Discord, but perhaps we'll make it a live experience.
I'm not sure yet. However, I wanted to at least write it down as a possibility. At least, we update the leadership pathway.
An immersive way — as if you were there.
Last but not least, we want to think about world building for the future. Altspace and Rec Room were unique. We created amazing worlds. It was the first time in church history where the scriptures were experienced in an immersive way as if you were there.
However, VRChat is difficult to build in. As we journey through Voyage 20, we must have our finger on the pulse of upcoming world-building platforms.
Ideas on the horizon
There are many possible ideas to implement. Spatial. Minecraft. GTA. For right now, let's set sail in this current direction before adding anything else to the ship. Let's get our bearings down, and then come together on the high seas to see where the wind is leading us.
A course correction, not a rebrand
Back to our Pauline
roots.
In the book of Acts we find a blueprint: two kinds of ministry. Paul to the Gentiles, Peter to the Jews. Not the same presentation. Not the same methods. By design.
Peter had the patience and the gifting to help religious people. It takes a particular language, and perhaps even particular values, to reach them well.
Paul could not do the religious ministry. It was too frustrating for him. The founders of this church are Pauline in expression. This is who we are.
Scripture shows the diversity of God. The way he works in one is not the way he works in another. Different language, and maybe even different values, are needed to convey what is ultimately the transcendence of the gospel.
Man tries to codify it, but the Spirit is wild, moving how it wants, through whoever it wants, whenever it wants. Soteriology is all over the place anyway. Humans get tripped up on words, phrases, systems, and formulas. And maybe there is a method to this madness, at least sometimes.
So we boil it down to this. There are two types of ministry. One to the religious, because they need God. Another to the non-religious, because they need God as well. It was never one ministry. It was always two. Thought leaders call this the Pauline and the Petrine.
VR MMO Church was birthed as a Pauline ministry. But along the way we strayed, and were fully adopted into a Petrine one. That is not our calling.
This may unsettle some religious people, who will find themselves out of alignment with the ministry they truly need. But we must align our energy to our calling. We might not draw a crowd, but we will draw the people meant for us. We might not get funding from the church, but we will be powerful in our portfolio in the world to come. Prepare for this shift.
Buckle up. We are about to hit the seas again.
I want to thank each one of you who have sailed with us. If you are getting off the boat, we want to say thank you for all you have done. If you are new to the crew, buckle up. We are about to hit the seas again. Who knows where our adventure will lead.
